Last spring we decided it was finally time to plan a vacation to Hawaii...something that we had been talking about for some time. We debated about a land-only trip, but eventually decided on a cruise on Norwegian's Pride of America (POA) that visits four islands during seven days. The cruise was booked for mid-November and we also found a VRBO condo in Waikiki where we would spend a few days prior to the cruise.
As summer rolled around, various issues caused us to re-think the plans and we decided November just wasn't going to work. About the same time, I discovered that the POA would be going into drydock in San Francisco in February and there would be a one-time 11-day cruise as the ship sailed back to the islands.
For the November cruise we had each booked connecting obstructed view cabins. (The windows were blocked by a lifeboat.) For several hundred dollars LESS, we were able to re-book on the longer cruise out of SF in March AND get a free upgrade to a balcony cabin! Surprising to us, we were also able to keep the senior discount and free gratuities that had been included on the first booking. What a deal on a cruise that is notoriously expensive!
Here is the itinerary for our cruise which was scheduled to sail on Tuesday, March 15:
Hopefully the posts that follow will be helpful to anyone planning a similar trip...or at the very least somewhat entertaining and enjoyable to read!

Mahalo! (Hawaiian thank-you!)
Thank you for the wonderful review and photos. Do you happen to have any pictures of the dining room menus? I know they will change many times before my cruise, but it is still fun to look at them.
ReplyDeleteSorry...but I don't have any photos of the menus. We didn't eat in the dining room as much on this cruise as usual, partially due to the very slow service. Following the drydock the ship had all new menus and I think they were still in learning mode with the new dishes. The food was good, but so frustrating to just sit and wait...and wait...and wait. Some nights we chose the buffet just so we could be done in time to make the earlier show. I will recommend you make it a point to get a crepe at the buffet. They are made to order and had lots of choices of toppings...this made a great before bedtime snack!

Frustrating.. YES !
That said, issues like this are common on shake-down cruises.
They likely had a brand new staff on board ship.
For this reason, I avoid shake-down cruises, unless it's super-priced.
My preference is Repositing-cruise which are mostly super-priced, but with fewer port calls.
See ya on our 14-day to Alaska cruise !
